چکیده
There are two levels of rhythmic structure which are assumed to play a role in language acquisition: the basic rhythmic level and the first phrasal level. While the former is supposed to guide infants in language discrimination (Mehler and Nespor 2004), the latter signals the order of words within phrases. In particular, in Nespor et al. (1996), the hypothesis that relative prominence, that is the location of main stress, may play a role in language acquisition is investigated.

Towards a Syntactic Understanding of Prosodically Reduced Pronouns
Prosodically reduced pronouns come in two forms, “weak” and “clitic,” both differing from non-reduced “strong” pronouns. Both of these also occur in Westgermanic dialects and exhibit different properties which cannot always be unambiguously disentangled. The theoretical framework presented here allows us a straightforward disambiguation: reduced pronominal elements in the left periphery must be...

متن کاملWhen nominal features are marked on verbs: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.
It has been claimed that verb processing (as opposed to noun processing) is subserved by specific neural circuits in the left prefrontal cortex. In this study, we took advantage of the unusual grammatical characteristics of clitic pronouns in Italian (e.g., lo and la in portalo and portala 'bring it [masculine]/[feminine]', respectively)-the fact that clitics have both nominal and verbal charac...
متن کاملAssignment of reference to reflexives and pronouns in picture noun phrases: evidence from eye movements.
Most structural Binding Theories predict a complementary distribution between reflexives and pronouns in picture noun phrases containing possessors (e.g. "Ken's picture of himself/him"). In two head-mounted eye-tracking experiments, listeners frequently violated Binding Theory predictions for reflexives, often interpreting the reflexives as taking an antecedent outside of the binding domain, an...
متن کاملOn the representation of French and Italian clitics
0. Introduction Romance clitics, and more precisely, clitic pronouns, have been a topic in generative linguistics since the seventies. For linguists like Perlmutter (1971) and Kayne (1975), their most striking property was their linear order, which is different from the order of the phrases that realize the same grammatical functions. The direct object, e.g., follows the verb when it is noun ph...
